Owner's Comments of the Sydney 60

EUPHONY, formerly YES!, was built originally in 1997/8 as a Sydney 60 by the renowned Bashford International racing yacht builder in Australia. She proved herself as a very fast seaworthy yacht in a number of events (see results above). The current owner then bought her with a view to converting a successful racing yacht into a fast racer/cruiser with good accommodation and a lifting keel to enable the yacht to access shallow waters.

The hull was stripped out internally and a new sandwich deck built aft of the mast, joining the original about 500 mm from the gunwhale.

A new lifting keel was manufactured by UK specialists, Iron Brothers, and the keel lifts on two S/S hydraulic rams that “telescope” into the GRP sheathed, cast iron foil keel with a lead bulb. The keel retracts into the table so the interior is not impacted by it and there are sealed inspection hatches to facilitate maintenance and servicing. The keel was designed by Duncan Barr of Choose Design whose other commissions have included MIRABELLA, GBR Challenge and ERIKSON. He also consulted on the structural work undertaken in the conversion.

The entire interior of the hull was therefore renewed in 2004, from cabling to seacocks, from the engine to the galley. Some of the deck gear was also renewed to enable the rig to be changed with spreaders being swept aft by 20 degrees and no need for runners. The backstay, forestay and roller furling gear was renewed in 2004 and the running rigging was renewed in 2006. Through deck lines mean that all the lines are lead aft to the cockpit leaving the deck clear and clutter free.

The modifications were completely overseen by Hamble UK-based CE Proof and RCD certification is available.

EUPHONY has to be viewed to see how racing technology has been fused with custom cruising oriented modifications to produce a light, fast, lift-keel, cruiser/racer that will sail as fast as the wind from 5-10 knots, happily cruise in the teens in a breeze and will motor at 9-10 knots too. Current top builders are striving to build strong, light, performance cruisers, using the latest technologies and the results, whilst impressive, are hugely expensive. EUPHONY offers her next owner all these features at a fraction of the price.

Service history: Formerly a Sydney 60 converted by Mountbatten Boatworks to a racer/cruiser design by Chris Stimson. Light weight materials were used in the conversion to enhance the high spec racing hull to create a fusion of a fast, very strong, hi-tech hull with a modern, airy, deck saloon cruising interior. A hydraulic bulb lifting keel enables EUPHONY to access ports and creeks normally too shallow for yachts of her size and yet sail like a race boat with the keel down. The structure is built to ABS guidelines for building and classing offshore yachts. The hull is laminated with vinylester resin with extensive use of Kevlar uni-directional and Kevlar/Eglass combination with foam core of various density.Hull colour: gunmetal grey with orange bootline. White non-skid deck. Hull profile: fin/bulb spade rudder.
