Short Description of the Irwin 52 Cutter Ketch

This Irwin 52' cutter ketch was designed by Fred Irwin and built in Florida, USA. This Irwin 52, Andrea, is an ideal “live aboard” and cruising yacht that provides excellent accommodation combined with good sailing performance. The boat is well maintained and many systems have been updated or replaced in the last two years. The Irwin 52 was the model that started the big boat deck-saloon revolution.

Engines & Propulsion

A Perkins M90 four- cylinder naturally-aspirated marine diesel engine (serial no. LD14420U545804W, of 83hp / 63kW nominal rating) with Borg Warner Velvet Drive transmission is flexibly mounted on wooden bearers beneath the saloon sole, bearers incorporating a transverse steel brace at their forward end and a GRP drip tray fitted beneath the engine. Shaft driven 3 blade fixed prop. Engine believed installed in 1995.

Engine ancillaries
Engine panel at steering console, incorporating key/preheater switch, tachometer, hour meter, temperature gauge, oil pressure gauge, gearbox oil pressure gauge and voltmeter. Single-lever control adjacent operating gear and throttle via flexible Morse-type cables, solenoid-operated stop mechanism. Belt-driven alternator and freshwater pump. Gear driven raw cooling water pump. A oil sump pump is fitted.

Tender and outboard motors

Generator
12kW Onan generator (utilising a Kubota water-cooled diesel engine) with acoustic shield. Fuel supply is from main engine’s tanks, raw water supply from a strainer at a seacock beneath the galley sole, water-cooled exhaust led to a Halyard exhaust splitter from which gases discharge at a waterline skin fitting and cooling water at a below-waterline skin fitting with seacock.

Rotary isolation switches select input voltage and source.
Powerstat variable autotransfer unit supplies power to the 110-volt circuits when a 220 volt source is selected. The refrigerator, television, computer, etc. are powered from the DC circuit via the inverter.

General Equipment

Ground tackle
Buhler anchor (approx 40.8kg) stowed in starboard bowsprit roller with 100 metres of 10mm galvanised short link chain and anchor hook.
34kg (75lb) plough anchor in port bowsprit roller with 10 metre 10mm chain and 100 metres of 20mm three-strand warp.
A fisherman-type kedge anchor of approx 15-20kg stowed in lazerrette
Bow anchors are handled by a Lofrans 1500W electric anchor windlass with rope drum and chain gypsy, mounted on the foredeck with foot switches adjacent and second foot switches at the cockpit console.

LPG
Five 2.76kg butane cylinders (Petrogaz) are strapped within a sealed locker beneath the starboard sidedeck, which has a drain discharging at an above-waterline skin fitting. The cylinder in use has a valve/regulator from which a short length of flexible gas delivery tubing connects to the main run of copper gas delivery tubing. This leads via a solenoid valve in a galley locker (switch adjacent), and a second length of flexible hose makes final connection to the appliances. A Pilot Mini gas detector alarm is fitted with its sensor in the bilge. A gimballed gas cooker has two burners, grill and oven (flame-failure devices on all burners), pan clamps and gimballing prevention. An additional non gimballed two burner gas hob is set into the galley work surface.Gas piping renewed 2010

Freshwater system
GRP freshwater tanks (1000 litres) beneath saloon are integral with the hull. Pressurised hot and cold freshwater is supplied by means of a Flojet pump with in-line strainers mounted within the engine compartment, with hot water stored within an 80- litre calorifier mounted beneath a galley worktop and heated either by the engine’s cooling circuit or from shore power or generator by means of an AC electric immersion heater.

Stainless steel twin galley sink with hot/cold mixer, common drain leading via a trap to discharge above the waterline.

Stainless steel washbasins in forward and aft toilet compartments, with hot/cold mixer taps. The forward compartment has a GRP shower tray and laminate-faced and ceramic tiled bulkheads, and is provided with a flexible showerhead supplied by a hot/cold mixer. The aft compartment has a GRP hip bath also acting as a shower tray and a shower with a hot/cold mixer. The bulkheads are tiled and laminate-faced. A small washbasin with a hot/cold mixer is fitted in a locker in the walk-through. A flexibly-mounted shower is fitted in the crew’s toilet compartment. A aft deck freshwater shower is fed from a tap in the lazarette.

Toilets
Electric toilets are fitted in forward and aft toilet compartments, with discharge led to plastic holding tanks beneath the forward vee-berth and aft cabin sole. The holding tanks are discharged by means of electric gulper pumps with hoses looped well above the waterline before connecting to below-waterline skin fittings with seacocks. Tank vents are led to above-waterline skin fittings.

Ventilation
Ten hatches and twelve portlights opening over the accommodation. Air is ducted to the bilge and ducted to and from the engine compartment.

5 – 12v variable speed/direction fans in cabins

Air Conditioning
3 Cruisair air conditioning units are fitted beneath the aft cabin berth, saloon and forward berths. They are seawater- cooled via a single below waterline intake seacock with strainer and have discharge water led to individual waterline skin fittings with seacocks. A Danfoss electric circulating pump is located in the galley bilge.

Bilge pumps
1 - manual diaphragm-type pump is mounted in the galley bulkhead, with suction tubing from main bilge sump (where a strum guard is incorporated) and discharge tubing leads to a skin fitting above the waterline.
3 - submersible electric bilge pumps are fitted in the bilges (one of approx. 2000 gph and two of approx. 1500 gph nominal discharge capacity), the upper one is located in a slightly higher bilge to act as an emergency bilge pump and bilge level alarm. Automatic float switches are fitted to all pumps and the emergency pump has an audible alarm. Discharges are looped high and led to skin fittings above the waterline.

Owner's Comments of the Irwin 52 Cutter Ketch

Andrea's owners live aboard and provide luxury skippered charters in the Aegean and Adriatic. Andrea is current in Marti Marina near Marmaris, Turkey. The owners are happy to include the marina berth and the WEB site with the boat sale should the future owner wish to continue berthing in Marti and/or chartering. A turnover in excess of 50000 euros is easily achievable.
