Designed by Vrolijk, this custom 52' cruiser was built in 1995 for a very demanding owner. A very special, fast, comfortable and easily handled cruising yacht by one of the today’s top designers. This Vrolijk 52' is of alloy and composite construction, totally re-fitted and re-launched in 2006. She is fully-equipped with lifting keel and water ballast, a powerful and unique fast cruiser.
The thinking behind this system is to utilise the engine as auxiliary generator as well. To this end a sub frame is attached to the front of the engine carrying a separate layshaft running in its own bearings and driven by the engine via a rubber flexible coupling. Off this shaft is driven the Sea Recovery 90l/h water-maker and two Reece-Neville 24v x 75amp heavy duty marine alternators. Whilst the engine is used for propulsion, fresh water is made, batteries are charged (and hence refrigeration is carried out) and fresh water is heated for the vessels hot water system. Instead of running an auxiliary generator whilst at anchor (often noisily running at 3000rpm), the engine is run at a quiet fast tick-over carrying out all the above functions., as well as charging its own battery by the conventionally-fitted new Reece-Neville 12v x 75amp insulated return marine alternator.
The engine is a Yanmar 4JH2 82bhp turbocharged marine diesel fitted to a Yanmar Kanzaki KM4A marine gearbox with a 2.63 reduction ratio. Power is transmitted via an Aquadrive thrust bearing to a new 35mm stainless propeller shaft and thence to a 20” Gori 3-blade folding propeller with an “overdrive” facility. The shaft emerges from the hull through a Volvo Penta dry seal and is fitted with a rope cutter just aft of the P-bracket. An underwater viewing window is fitted to the hull to one side of the P-bracket so that one can check on any debris collected by the prop. A new zinc anode is fitted to the shaft and there are a further 4 large zinc anodes recessed into the hull.
The engine exhaust is water-cooled at the exhaust manifold and then passes through a Vetus Aqualift and a swan-neck before emerging above the waterline at the stern.

The Electrical Systems of this Vrolijk Custom 52' cruiser - 220-volt AC
a. From the main battery bank and via the new Victron Phoenix Multi 24/2500/70 inverter/charger, the various AC circuits are automatically supplied with AC current through the 6 AC circuit breakers and RCB at the main switch panel at the chart table.
b. From shore power. When shore power is connected, current is transfered through a new Victron 3600 isolation transformer and thence to the inverter/charger, which automatically feeds it to the AC circuit breakers at the chart table switch panel.
AC 3-pin sockets are fitted throughout the accommodation.
12-volt DC
Primarily an engine start and run system, this utilises a new Delco Freedom 105AH sealed, maintenance-free, high cranking current battery, charged by a new 75amp Reece-Neville insulated return marine alternator with its own regulator fitted to the main engine.
24-volt DC
a. For bow thruster, keel lift and anchor windlass. Two new Red Flash 3500 sealed, high cranking current batteries are fitted next to the bow thruster motor and operate the thruster, keel lift and anchor windlass via a heavy duty isolating switch and heavy duty fuses. This battery bank is charged, along with the main battery bank, by two new 75amp Reece-Neville insulated return marine alternators running off an engine lay-shaft. Regulation is via a new “smart” multi-stage Adverc regulator. This battery bank and the main battery bank can also be charged via the new Victron Phoenix Multi 24/2500/70 inverter/charger when connected to shore power.
b. The main battery bank. Four new Lifeline GPL-8D Deep Cycle AGM 255AH sealed, maintenance-free batteries provide the general electrical needs of the vessel. These are charged by the same means as the other 24-volt battery bank and supply 24 volts DC to the various systems via a heavy duty isolating switch and a series of heavy duty fuses. From the fuses, power is distributed to various areas and to the 28 DC circuit breakers at the chart table main switch panel.
DC sockets are fitted thoughout the accommodation.

Water Ballast system:
Two 400-litre water ballast tanks are situated in the port and starboard quarters. These can be utilised to provide extra stability on long tacks and are supplied with water by a high-capacity transfer pump and system of valves beneath the cockpit sole. Gravitational transfer can also be achieved via a rigid large-bore connecting pipe and valve.
Bilge system:
All bilge water is transferred to the bilge centrally situated ahead of the engine.
An alarm system is fitted to the bilge which sounds if bilge water reaches a level of 40mm above normal.
The bilge is emptied on either tack by 2 manual Henderson Mk5 pumps or by 3 Rule/Jabsco electric submersible bilge pumps operated automatically by Rule float switches or from the chart table switch panel.
Steering system:
Port and starboard helm positions are situated at the aft end of the cockpit. The two wheels are carried by separate pedestals also housing two magnetic Suunto steering compasses as well as controls for the retractable Max Power bow-thruster and Lewmar anchor windlass.
The wheels drive a Whitlock Mamba rod-linked steering system fitted with two autopilot drives. One drive is used, the other is fitted as a spare and can be used simply by wiring change-over.
Both linkage systems join at the final reduction gearbox which is connected by rod to the steering lever attached to the carbon-fibre rudder stock. This stock runs in two self-aligning bearings and is attached to a semi-balanced high aspect ratio spade rudder. Autopilot drives are controlled by either one of two Ratheon control units situated at the chart table or by the starboard helm.

Panta Rhei of Fowey was originally designed and built in 1995 for a very experienced Dutch racing yachtsman who wanted a fast cruising yacht to sail in and between the Mediterranean and Caribbean with his family. Having retired from racing, he called on the services of Rolf Vrolijk (of Alinghi fame) to design the yacht incorporating many of his own ideas resulting from a lifetime of sailing. He wanted a modern high aspect lifting keel design providing maximum draft for fast passage-making while allowing access to shallow moorings and marinas whilst cruising; the Judel & Vrolijk design team had much experience in designing this type and size of yacht. He then went to the Dutch yard of Kesteloo to have the yacht built as they were very experienced in building custom designed vessels in aluminium with composite decks. He used Neville Hutton boat-builders of Lymington to build the carbon-fibre deck and rudder. This combination resulted in a very strong and light yacht with excellent sailing performance and one that was comfortable and could be confidently handled by one person (he sailed across the Atlantic single-handed several times). Shortly after launching, a 7-page article appeared in the January 1996 edition of the Dutch sailing magazine “Waterkampioen” (copy available). This article recounts the conception and building of “The dream yacht of a perfectionist”.
Panta Rhei has now been totally re-fitted with changes to the accommodation and electrical systems as well as the removal of the doghouse, which was found to be very warm in hot climates. This has been replaced with teak covered cockpit coamings and a spray hood and a double Bimini cover has also been added. In a further attempt to keep things cool in hot climes, the hull has been re-finished in white rather than the original colour of dark blue. As a result of what amounts to a total re-fit, all electrical wiring, switchgear, navigation instruments, alternators, batteries, pumps, toilets, electronics, inverter/charger, isolation transformer, autopilot, deck hatches etc. are all brand new.
After the re-fit Panta Rhei was surveyed and coded for charter in Category 2.
