Owner's Comments of the Amel Super Maramu

Nowornot is an Amel Super Maramu built by Chantiers Amel in 1990. She was originally commissioned by Mr. Reginald Mansbridge, of England, under the name “Jinny”. Berthed continuously in St. Jean Cap Ferrat (SJCF), France, she was very lightly used as a summer vacation yacht. We understand that she took one trip to Corsica, Sardinia and the Italian coast, but otherwise stayed very close to home. In her later years with Mr. Mansbridge (who sold her in 2002 when he was 80 years old and retiring from boating) she was only sailed occasionally along the French Coast. When we purchased the boat in July, 2002, the engine and generator had approximately 400 hours and 63 hours respectively, and both the interior and exterior had been pampered and were in pristine condition.

We purchased “Jinny” and recommissioned her “Nowornot” in July, 2002 for a one year cruising experience in Europe. Beginning in August, we cruised much of the Mediterranean coasts of France and Italy (west side), and the islands of Corsica and Sardinia. We wintered in Gaeta, Italy (south of Rome), where we hauled the boat for about 30 days to have some routine bottom work and minor maintenance performed (see below). We left Gaeta in mid-April, heading south, and at the time of this writing are cruising the Greek Ionian islands. We will be heading from here through the Aegean islands to the Turkish coast, and will return to complete our trip in Greece in early August. The engine and generator now have approximately 780 hours and 170 hours respectively. We sincerely wish we could bring Nowornot with us to the U.S., but our location and the minimal use we would likely make of her make this impractical. Thus we are preparing to sell her when we complete our trip.

Service history: Nowornot has been maintained to the highest standards since she was new. For 12 years under her first owner, she was regularly serviced by the Amel yard in Hyeres, France, and their related service providers (for hull work and engine maintenance). Every 2 years (approximately) she was delivered to Hyeres, where she was hauled, cleaned and repainted with anti fouling (La Rose des Vents), had all engines serviced (Rectification P.L.M.) and had regular maintenance and upgrades performed (Amel). Based on records and receipts provided to me by Mr. Mansbridge, she was delivered to Hyeres for service work in 1991, 1993, 1995, 1997 (Amel only), 1998, and 2000. In 1995 she had several upgrades/additions that reflected some changes Amel had made to her production standards in 1993 (including upgraded boom, fridge and bow rollers, cockpit side screens and anchor chain counter). Minor work and servicing, and much of the electronics additions and upgrades, were performed by providers near SJCF. I have originals or copies of his service history and receipts for work performed. One of the main reasons we purchased this particular boat was its extremely good condition and complete maintenance history. With only one year to enjoy the Med, we did not want to spend much of it working on the boat. We have enjoyed exactly what we were looking for. We did make a number of minor repairs, particularly during our first several weeks, that reflected the prior owners lack of use (serviced some electric motors, lubricated most systems and moving parts, replaced all propane fittings, etc.). In a way we had to break her in again after several years of very minimal use. This work was all performed by ourselves, with the assistance of an Italian captain who joined us for the first 3 weeks of our trip. Since then we have performed routine cleaning and lubrication of appropriate working parts, and, as mentioned above, hauled the boat for work in December 2002/January 2003 for more significant maintenance work (performed by Cantiere Navali del Golfo, recommended to us as the best in the Gaeta area). This included scraping and painting the bottom, servicing the engine, generator, and outboard, and other more minor repairs detailed on their work report. With respect to the bottom work, while it was very clean given two years since repainting, it showed significant peeling from old layers. We had the hull extensively hand scraped – Amel recommends against sand blasting, a less expensive alternative, due to possible gelcoat damage – before it was primed and re-painted.Other than this work, the only significant repairs/replacements we have done involved our chartplotter (new mother board) and our autopilot (new/upgraded course computer) and the replacement of the Genoa (new from Lee Sails in March 2003). In addition, we have tried to continuously perform the small repairs necessary to keep a used boat in excellent condition, and have made many small additions to enhance our enjoyment of her.
