 History of X-Yachts

In 1979, one of today’s most successful and quality orientated production yards was established in Denmark. During the 1980’s, X-Yachts designed and built winning IOR yachts for World Class Racing. The success acheived with this market attracted the attention of the cruising market, which was then looking for fast, high quality and comfortable sailing yachts. It seemed very clear to X-Yachts that we should use boat building experience from the fast racers and combine this with building high performance cruising yachts.

Throughout the 1990’s, X-Yachts Range of Performance Cruisers was established. The X-412 was the first model in the new line, and was followed by the X-512, X-382, IMX 38, X-442, X-362, X-332, X-302, X-612, X-482 and finally, in 1999, the X-562.

The new millennium was celebrated with the introduction of the IMX 40 racer - an almost unbeatable IMS and IRC performer. In early 2002, the IMX 45 followed her little sister onto the racecourse and continued the successful tradition worldwide. The first X-Yacht 73, built in 2001, was another milestone in the yard’s history. She represented their entry into the luxury “deep water, cruising market”.

The New Generation
With the launch of the X-43 and X-46 in 2003, a new generation of performance cruisers was born. Three new models followed in 2004; the X-40, X-37 and X-50. In summer 2006, the X-55 was launched - a yacht with many of the elegant details of the IMX 70 racer/cruiser which was, itself, launched as a “State of the Art” yacht, with its modern yet classic design, in the summer of 2005.

One Design Classes
The new X-35 One Design followed the traditions of the X-79 and X-99, as popular large fleet one-design racers and, in 2007, two hundred X-35s were racing around the world as an ISAF recognized class. In 2007, the bigger sister, the X-41, has started building another X-Yachts one design class with its first World Championship held in Copenhagen in July 2008.

Today the yard is still headed by the three founders.

Looking to buy an X-Yacht Performance Cruiser?

X-Yachts have researched the cruiser market for several years. A superb cruiser, targeted towards the long distance cruising market, contains more and heavier equipment than a cruiser mainly targeted for coastal sailing. This means: increased tank volumes, diesel generator, watermaker, large fridges, heavy oven, microwave oven, dishwasher, washing machine, powered winches, serious anchor equipment, bow thruster, entertainment system, various communication systems, furlers to handle sails and, finally, and consequently a larger engine to be able to push it all in comfort.

A deeper hull shape, with V sections forward of the keel, will ensure a smoother upwind sailing: under sail, under engine, or a combination of both.

Exactly as the big car manufactures are doing, X-Yachts have chosen to make the yacht’s standard specification very extensive. This allows them to offer a high level of quality, as they are able to carry out an “in depth” study of the complexity of the installations.

The launch of the first X-65 is set for spring 2009, with another four sister ships planned for launch the same year.

The X-Yacht X-65 is the result of combining the conceptual ideas behind the X-55 and the IMX 70. The clean, uncluttered deck layout mirrors X-Yachts philosophy: simplicity and functionality, with a modern yet classic styling. Comfort in style combined with world-class quality
The design criteria: To create a big sister to the successful X-55, which won the title: “European Yacht of the Year 2007”.

The X-Yacht X-65 utilises well-proven build techniques and also introducing vacuum bag epoxy technology for hull and deck. The X-65 is being designed and engineered in cooperation with the most respected suppliers. As standard, discontinuous rod rigging with Navtec hydraulic backstay cylinders and boom vang will support a 3 spreader, tapered carbon mast with a “Park Avenue” carbon boom. Electrical deck recessed headstay furler system will make light work of the headsail handling.

The vision behind the One Design was to create a sporty and simple yacht to sail with extremely pleasing lines, providing under deck comfort areas for the crew after racing, but also for the active family during weekend or holiday cruising.

Popular X-Yachts Models

The X-Yacht 42 is a cruising yacht with more focus on long distance “bluewater” cruising. The same build and design qualities found on the performance range will also be found in the X-Yacht Xc 45, but more attention has been paid to the needs of the cruising sailor. The design intention is to create safety combined with function, yet sustaining timeless aesthetics.

With deeper hull sections than those of a normal “performance cruiser”, there is added volume for large tanks, which also gives the Xc 42 a smoother motion in all weathers.
At the bow, an optional stainless steel A-frame with attachment points, for both an eye for the asymmetric spinnaker, and a bow ladder.

The X-Yacht Xc 45 is the first in a completely new series dedicated to cruising. Work on the Xc 45 has been underway in the X-Yachts Design Group for more than eight months.

The interior of the Xc 45 will be either a two-cabin version with a “work station” cabin allowing very easy access to the yacht’s machinery, or a more conventional 3-cabin layout. To offer extra daylight into the cabins, the Xc 45 will have plenty of openable coach roof port lights as well as deck hatches to ensure optimum ventilation. The main cabin will be offered in two alternative versions, one to include a shower compartment adjacent to the aft head, and another to include a dedicated navigation station.

Optional extras such as: liferaft, MOB module, windshield and bemini are well integrated in the design and ads to the styling of the Xc 45. The bathing platform is designed as a "fold down" transom port while the aft deck is lowered to allow easy passage from the large cockpit.

For X-Yachts to launch an entirely new cruising range was a bold move and one that has proved incredibly popular. The original Xc 45 was followed by the Xc 42 but some sailors wanted more. They desired more speed and more space – a larger engine, bigger tanks, increased stowage. They also wished to have the option of dedicated crew accommodation. With the creation of the Xc 50 - cruising is taken to a new dimension of comfort

The Xc 50 will provide a true offshore cruiser for those who want a boat that is capable of sailing far beyond the horizon.

She will have the same style of deep, wide hull that gives her smaller sisters their excellent seakeeping. She will also incorporate their proven technology with reliable systems and incredibly strong construction that ensures a stiff, safe and seaworthy yacht.

The extended length of the Xc 50 will give her extremely elegant lines with lines led beneath the deck to her spacious cockpit. The custom-designed mast and rig will provide plenty of power while powered winches and intelligent design allow simple shorthanded sailing.

Below decks there will be the extremely high quality of workmanship that is expected from the craftsmen at X-Yachts. A choice of hand-finished teak and more modern surfaces allows owners to combine traditional and modern to suit their taste.

The saloon will be luxuriously finished with the port settee converting into a pair of chairs to reveal a stylish drinks cabinet. An extremely large and well equipped galley will allow elegant entertaining in port or comfortable cooking at sea.

The spacious owner’s cabin is located forward and clients can choose to have the large double bunk situated centrally or to port. The latter option allows for the creation of crew quarters in the forepeak as well as a long settee in the cabin that can be used as an extra berth. The owner’s heads are en suite while there is an additional heads to serve the two generously sized aft guest cabins.

The philosophy behind the X-Yacht X-34 Performance Cruiser is that it is being designed, developed and specified to reach a high level of quality for the enjoyment of the performance oriented sailor and his crew or family. She is the smallest member of the Performance Cruising range, enabling us to offer a “baby sister” for the X-37 and X-40.

Great attention is paid to constructing smooth and harmonious hull lines; a stylish and fine entry; a relatively wider waterline beam than the X-35 One Design, to increase the hull stability and to locate the centre of buoyancy relatively further aft, to enable the sail plan to include an "under deck furler system"; as well as the heavy cruising oriented items, which often are located in the aft lockers.

The cockpit has been carefully designed to incorporate “an easy to launch” life raft, resting under the floor behind the helmsman’s position. The X-34 has a large diameter wheel steering, with room for a magnetic steering compass, as well as for a stainless steel "grab rail”, which can accommodate instruments such as a chart plotter screen. On each side of the companionway, the halyards and control lines are operated by self-tailing winches and held by robe jammers. The halyards and control lines are deck recessed.

X-34 will sport a non-overlapping headsail configuration which makes life easier for the cruising oriented sailor; and, secondly, a modest sail plan seems to give the best performance compared to the IRC or IMS rating. The calculation of the sail plan is taking account of the lack of overlapping headsails and is largely compensated for. Furthermore, it makes it possible to choose a lighter mast section, which adds to the yacht’s stability.

As with all other X-Yachts designs, the spar maker will be carefully chosen - and each detail will be analysed and engineered to a degree, which will set the X-34 apart. Keel stepped spar, custom designed section, discontinued rod rigging, tapered masthead and Spectra halyards are the most important key words relating to any X-Yachts model and will also apply to the new X-34.

The interior layout is very traditional: two double cabins; a large main cabin with L-shaped galley; plenty of room for crockery, pots and pans; a dedicated nav. station, with room for navigational and electronic equipment. In designing the interior, considerable attention has been paid to creating a feeling of space and light. The two double-berthed cabins have been given white surfaced wardrobes and bulkheads.

The standard engine will be a 3 cylinder diesel 20 HP S-drive, and will be housed in an entirely sound-insulated engine compartment. An engine of 29 HP will be optional. Long-lasting cell batteries, automatic fuses and tinned cabling will be part of the comprehensive electrical specification.

The elegant yet sporty looking X-Yachts X-37 was launched in summer 2004, as a fast cruiser and designed to set the standard for quality built yachts. The X-Yachts X-37 design appeals to couples and young families alike, as ease of handling is coupled with spacious and high quality interior to obtain the complete cruising experience. The sailing pleasure and performance furthermore satisfy the owners with racing ambitions, as both rig type, hull shape and weight distribution have been optimised to the typical high standards of X-Yachts.

The cockpit is designed to give the cruising family ample space and comfort when sailing and mooring in the harbour. All sail control lines are led back into the cockpit, including the single line reefing lines for the mainsail. The standard mainsheet system utilises a rough and fine trim to allow easy control of the 43.7 m2 mainsail. The German mainsheet system can be fitted with winches on both sides as optional.

The new hull lines together with the lead bulb keel and new rig design makes the yacht sail smoothly through waves, and turn gusts of wind into speed. The hull and deck are of sandwich construction, thereby reducing weight where possible. The steel girder takes all the loads from the keel, mast and rig, which allows X-Yachts to apply higher rig tension than competitors, giving an X-Yacht increased sailing performance and pleasure.

The detail of work, the choice of mahogany veneers, furniture fittings and the yacht’s technical specification all mirror that the X-37 belongs to the new generation of performance cruisers

The hull lines and layout of the new X-Yachts X-40 are designed from the highly successful production racer, the IMX 40, and perfected to provide the crui¬sing family with a stiff, fast and comfortable yacht.

On the water she makes a profound impression. The easy and responsive handling of the X-Yachts X-40 is supported by having all control lines and sheets led back to the cockpit. The double-ended mainsheet system is led back to either side of the cockpit under the side decks, and can be controlled either directly by the helm or by a crew member. The large steering wheel together with the needle bearing steering system make helming and manoeuvring the yacht an unforgettable pleasure.

With the cruising family in mind, the X-Yachts Design Group has developed a yacht with many hidden qualities and solutions that ensure an enjoyable time is also spent below deck.
The feel of excellence starts with the selection of the finest teak veneers, the beautiful shaped hull windows in the saloon, further perfected by the natural light that flows through the chrome polished skylights and portlights.

A stay on board is additionally enhanced by the well-designed saloon and galley, both with ample storage facilities for food and cutlery.

The X-Yachts X-43, launched in spring 2003, is spearheading the new generation of X-Yachts Performance Cruisers. The X-Yachts X-43 appeals to the cruising family and the racing crew alike with her high level of standard equipment including anchor windlass, German mainsheet system, stainless steel anchor, Andersen winches and gas springs on all cockpit lockers and sprayhood.

The cockpit layout will appeal to the cruising family and the racing crew alike. The steering system utilising needle roller bearings, and a direct connection to the rudder, results in making the X-43 feel smooth and responsive on the helm. She accelerates quickly in light airs and remains stiff in a breeze, making her a comfortable, effortless yacht to sail. Features that contribute to this include a long mainsheet traveller which runs low down in the cockpit.

The double-ended mainsheet system is led back to either side of the cockpit under the side decks, while the halyards and other associated control lines are led under the coachroof, which has an integrated recessed sprayhood, and then back to halyard winches either side of the companionway hatch. The interior quality is of usual high X-Yachts standard using the finest teak veneers and with superior finishing throughout. The beautifully designed hull portlights will make the X-43 stand out, and allow additional natural light into the aft cabins and the saloon for improved comfort.

The interior volume and layout will allow a family of up to eight members to enjoy their cruising. The engine installation will meet the same requirements as the larger luxury yachts like the X-Yachts 73, which results in the highest standard of noise insulation, with forced cooled air ventilation via sound insulated piping.

The elegant yet sporty looking X-Yachts X-46 was launched in July 2003. Not many cruiser-racer yachts will boast the same high level of standard features as the X-Yachts X-46. With her beautiful chrome polished aluminium framed skylights and recessed port lights, her rounded off sheer line with teak rail, teak laid deck in the cockpit and at the bathing platform she will appeal to the cruising family and racing crew alike.

The helmsman will be pleasantly surprised by her easy handling at sea. Features that contribute to this include a long mainsheet traveller which runs low down in the cockpit. The double-ended mainsheet system is led back to either side of the cockpit under the side decks, while the halyards and other associated control lines are led under the coachroof, which has an integrated recessed sprayhood, and then back to halyard winches either side of the companionway hatch.

The optional anchor launch system is a 20 kg CQR anchor handled by a hinged arm, which is operated by a gas driven devise nicely hiding the anchor below a hatch at the foredeck when not in use, and rising and folding forward when preparing to drop the anchor.

The hull and deck are of sandwich construction, thereby reducing weight where possible. The steel girder takes all the loads from the keel, mast and rig, which allows us to apply higher rig tension than our competitors, giving the X-Yacht increased sailing performance and pleasure.

The heavier components on board have been carefully located to ensure correct centre of gravity and stability, further enhancing the performance of our yachts.

The 3-cabin layout has a sail locker positioned in front of the owner’s cabin with easy access through a deck hatch.

with her beautiful lines and open transom, the big sister to X-Yachts’ new Performance Cruiser range will appeal to anyone with a desire for power and sophistication simultaneously.

The design of the deck layout enables her to be easily manoeuvred by a short-handed cruising family. However, with two independent steering positions that provide added safety and allow the helmsman a clear view ahead, even with a full regatta crew onboard, the X-50 will fail no one, displaying a performance unmatched on the racecourse.

With her beautiful lines and open transom, the X-Yachts X-50 will turn heads while cruising under sail or lying on her mooring. The X-50 yacht has driver appeal, is responsive at the helm with maximum control and balance and she is very, very fast.

The deck has been kept clear of ropes by leading the mainsheet and other controls under the deck and coach roof on both sides to dedicated winches. The throttle and engine control panel are at hand for quick and easy manoeuvring into the marina and the elegant folding cleats are further examples of exquisite details that make the difference.

The X-Yachts X-50 is available in a 3-cabin modern and classic version - each cabin has its own head and offers the highest comfort and privacy. The 4-cabin modern version includes a separate crew cabin with bunk berth.

In the cockpit six people are easily seated at the teak table that when not in use is stowed away under the cockpit floor, as are the sheets and lines, in a small recessed compartment just in front of the main entrance. The life raft is stored in its own recessed compartment for safety on board.

For safety reason we have made one cockpit floor recessed compartment to fit a life raft. All control and trim lines are led under deck. Elegant cleats and the under deck Genoa furler are further examples of exquisite details that make the difference.

With the open transom, the large working cockpit in front of the steering wheel and all control lines on hand at both sides, the X-Yachts X-35 One Design is an exciting yacht to race around the buoys.

The X-35 is not only designed to perform in close fleet racing, but also as a fast sailing yacht during summer cruises. Her hull, keel and rudder configuration gives the helmsman a very light and direct feel of the yacht, and she responds immediately to minor corrections. The sail plan, with the powerful main sail and 106% max jib, has the ability to accelerate the X-35 out of tacks, and keep her in the fast lane upwind. The non-overlapping jib makes it easy for a shorthanded crew or family to sail the X-35, and an optional furling headstay converts the X-35 into a family friendly yacht.

Hoisting the spinnaker downwind will bring a smile to the face of any sailor who likes to be on board a yacht that needs little encouragement to step up a gear or two.

The X-Yachts X-41 will be yet another hit on the sailing scene. She will be sporting the latest within fast hull and appendage design; a non overlapping headsail configuration; double spreader, carbon mast and boom from one of Europe’s leading suppliers; large diameter carbon wheel; all trimlines leading to both sides of the coach roof; and a backstay adjustment run via the Magic Wheel.

Below deck the X-41 has an interior made to high marine standards. A front cabin and two symmetrical aft cabins with each a double berth, a functional and fully equipped galley to port and a light and spacious saloon where the family and crew can relax.

The 10m X-99s were manufactured between 1985 and 2004. 605 were built.
More than 100 units were presold and initially four yachts had to be built each week to satisfy the hungry market. The X-99 became X-Yachts’ first ISAF recognized class, and still hosts annual World Championships.

This 30 ft yacht, the X-302 was manufactured between 1994 and 2004. 117 were built. Replacing the X-312 using almost the same hull, though with a less raked bow and stern.

This very successful yacht was manufactured between 1994 and 2005. There were 432 built.Developed in parallel with the X-302 and one of the most successful and popular X-Yachts models ever. The X-332 was unmatched in the way she combined performance and comfort.

A 11m boat, the X-362 built between 1993 and 2003. 248 produced.

This was an exceptionally stiff yacht and appealed to more conservative sailors who demanded high levels of comfort. First introduced with a masthead rig and a curved mahogany interior.

The X-382 manufactured between 1992 and 2003 sported a large masthead rig, a large wheel, and a teak interior with moulded teak bulkheads that ensured maximum use of space. The X-382 was mainly focused on the cruising market, but was completely in tune with, offering excellent sailing performance and comfort. !41 were built.

The IMX 40 was introduced in 2000 as an IMS winner, sporting a carbon mast, boom and wheel as standard and introducing the ‘magic wheel’ backstay adjuster. The design won the European Championship as well as forming two-thirds of the Spanish team that won the Sardinia Cup. 99 IMX 40s were built between 2000 and 2004.

X-Yachts’ first model in the new "Performance Cruiser" range where the influence of IOR had completely disappeared as IMS became the dominant international handicap rule. The X-412 became another trendsetter and remained in production for more than 10 years between 1990 and 2003 when 252 were built.

The third Performance Cruiser, the [X-442[/b] also became a "classic" and remained in production for more than 10 years between 1993 and 2003. She was stiffer than the competition, and soon she became a benchmark for designers and builders of this new breed of performance cruisers. There were 127 built.

The [b[X-482[/b] replaced the X-512 and incorporated most of the deck details introduced on the X-612 such as the main sheet systems being led beneath deck and integrated storage for the sprayhood and captive wash boards. The X-482 was built between 1996 and 2004 when 64 boats were built.

The X-562 design closed the gap between the X-482 and X-612 and was built with the same high standard specification as her bigger and smaller sisters. In effect she was a petite version of the X-612 with the benefit of the very latest detailing. An open transom version was also developed. There were 21 boats built between 1999 and 2004
