Short Description of the Camper & Nicholson Custom 47' yawl
CAMPER & NICHOLSONS YARD NO: 886
MUSKETEER OF STUTTON
Built In 1963 by Camper and Nicholsons to Lloyds 100A1 classification
Designed (by Peter Nicholson) and built by Camper and Nicholsons’ Southampton yard over the winter of 1962/63. She was launched in the spring of 1963 for Peter (later Sir Peter) Green, then Commodore of the Royal Ocean Racing Club, and featured in the May’s Yachting World Magazine (and in the annual of the same year). Originally built a yawl, in 1964 she was converted to a sloop by adding 3 feet to the main mast and removing the mizzen. She raced competitively in the UK during the 1960’s, winning the RORC points championship at least once and taking part in two Fastnet Races.
MUSKETEER’s racing career came to an end in June 1970 when she was sold to Nigel Pattison of Itchenor Sailing Club who sailed her to the West Indies (for his honeymoon) and back over a 2 year period, returning in 1973. Following a short period with W.M. Tubby of Guernsey, ownership transferred to Royal Cruising Club member Henry S. Williams of Plymouth, a former flag officer of the Royal Western Yacht Club of England and a leading light in the club’s involvement in the Single Handed Transatlantic Race and the Double Handed Round Britain Race. In 1980 MUSKETEER was bought by fellow club member and serious blue water cruiser Jonathan Trafford who restored her yawl rig and took her on a cruise to the Caribbean and the USA 1981-83. On her return she remained that family’s cruising yacht until she was sold to 1987 to Kevin and Jan Townsend who cruising many happy sailing miles on her: much to Europe from Spain’s Atlantic coast, France, Ireland, Scotland to Norway and the Baltic, including Russia and Estonia. She also took part in some of the Tall Ship races: 1991 (Ireland), 1993 (Norway and Denmark) and then St. Petersburg and Finland. Through the 2000’s the Townsends offered Ocean Yacht Master courses and lived on board for a period.
Her present owners purchased MUSKETEER from the Townsends in 2007 since when she has been maintained by Poole-based shipwright Lee Woodford (who replaced the teak deck in spring 2008) and sailed with friends and family and in sailing adventures for novices, exploring the south coast, the Channel Islands and Brittany. She completed another Atlantic circuit 2016-2017 (the last leg on a ship), taking in ANTIGUA Classic Yacht Regatta 2017: winning Class D and coming 3rd in the Concours for privately maintained Classic Division yachts..

Owner's Comments of the Camper & Nicholson Custom 47' yawl
It is difficult to give 100% detail of all the work done throughout my ownership, but all work has been done in order to keep her up to a good standard.
Musketeer of Stutton was MCA coded from around 2009 – 2014 to take paying guests booked through my Discover Adventure Ltd (my adventure travel business) on sailing adventures. She therefore had to be kept up to a high standard and was inspected accordingly by the MCA surveyor.
2007/2008
Replacement teak deck by Lee Woodford.
Replacement of all deck fitting (as they were all aluminium)
3-8 coats of varnish throughout
2008 – 2014
Regular paint, varnish and repairs
New engine – 2014
Some planking replaced
2014-2016
Regular paint, varnish and repairs
Both main & mizzen un-stepped and repaired by Crusader Sails – new mast head fitting and shroud replacement in preparation for Atlantic crossing 2016
2016 – 2025 onwards
Regular maintenance varnish, hull paint, electrics, cruising shute etc
I have lots of invoices to prove expenditures and outline what was done.
